1763 bis 1767 studiert Lichtenberg an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Göttinger Universität u. a. Mathematik, Physik, Baukunst, Ästhetik, Europäische Staatengeschichte und Philosophie. Zwischen Ende des Studiums und Berufung zum außerordentlichen Professor 1770 verfasst er im Mai 1769 in Gedichtform ein „Schreiben an einen Freund“. Darin behandelt Lichtenberg in satirischem Ton die typischen Merkmale einer kleinen Universitätsstadt: Der ehemalige Student kritisiert den Universitätsbetrieb ebenso wie seinerzeit als ‚typisch’ angesehene studentische Verhaltensweisen: Duelle austragen, Feiern, Schuldenmachen und Tumulte.
Lichtenberg studied mathematics, physics, architecture, aesthetics, European history, and philosophy among other things at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Göttingen from 1763 to 1767. Between the end of his studies and his appointment as Professor Extraordinarius in 1770, he wrote a “Letter to a Friend” in the form of a poem in May 1769. Lichtenberg satirises the typical characteristics of a small university town in the text. The former student criticises the university life as well as what was regarded as ‘typical’ student behaviour for his time: duelling, partying, running into debt, and rioting.
