Der Geheime Kanzleisekretär Brandes, bei dem Lichtenberg 1782 um ein Darlehen für den Erwerb der Luftpumpe angefragt hatte, schreibt am 4. Mai 1787 an Heyne: „Unserm kleinen Lichtenberg habe ich dieser Tage eine Gefälligkeit thun können. Er war, wegen eines aus der Kasse erhaltenen Vorschusses, woraus er jährlich 50 Rtl. von seiner Besoldung stehen lassen musste, noch 175 Rtl. schuldig, und ich habe veranlasset, daß ihm solche, ohne förmliches Sollicitiren [= Bittgesuch einreichen], geschenkt ist.“
The Privy Council Secretary Brandes, from whom Lichtenberg had requested a loan in 1782, wrote the following to Heyne on 4 May 1787: “I was able to do our little Lichtenberg a favour today. On account of an advance received from the exchequer, which he had to use 50 Rtl. annually of his own income to pay, he still owed 175 Rtl., and I occasioned that this would be provided to him without formal solicitation.”
