„Man sagt gemeiniglich, daß man bey ihm statt Physik zu hören, ein Collegium über Experimente höre, und er hat daher, eigentlich zu reden, nicht sowohl Zuhörer als Zuschauer. Es ist wahr, daß er sich aus den Beweisen und Erklärungen nicht viel Angelegenheit macht, er bringt sie fast nur gelegentlich an, und als wäre es, weil er doch gerade des Weges ginge.“
“It is commonly said that instead of listening to a collegium on physics you listen to one on experiments with him, and therefore, speaking literally, he not only has listeners but spectators. It is true that he does not make much of the proofs and explanations; he introduces them almost only on occasion, and does so as if it were because he had just been passing in that direction.”
